UPMC WorkPartners Acquires HCMS Group

10/12/17

UPMC WorkPartners, a leading provider of integrated health and productivity solutions and part of UPMC Insurance Services Division, today announced the acquisition of HCMS Group, LLC (HCMS), a privately-held health information service company headquartered in Cheyenne, Wyo.

For more than two decades, WorkPartners has partnered with employers nationwide to assist them in reducing health care costs and improving worker productivity. WorkPartners' expansive product portfolio includes tailored health management and wellness offerings, employee assistance programs, workers' compensation coverage, employee health services, short-term disability management, FMLA programs, and benefit administration services. The acquisition of HCMS will complement and further strengthen this portfolio.

"We look forward to adding the expertise of HCMS to WorkPartners' suite of services, which includes absence management, short-term disability, and other health and productivity workplace solutions," said David Weir, president of WorkPartners. "Our shared goal is to assist clients in transforming the well-being of their workforce while maximizing employee engagement, lowering health care costs, and improving overall employee health."

By combining the power of advanced health analytics with individualized clinical prevention services, HCMS has been successful in bending the cost curve for its customers, including several large self-insured employers.

Their offerings include sophisticated data analytic platforms, employer-centric business intelligence engines, and targeted telephonic clinical intervention programs. Combined, they allow HCMS' customers to identify individuals at greatest risk for high utilization and/or low productivity and to provide targeted clinical interventions to modify these cost and productivity trajectories.

Founded in 2003, by Harold (Hank) Gardner MD, HCMS has 65 employees in 16 states, with a growing customer base. Michel (Mick) Simon, HCMS' current chief operating officer, will remain with HCMS and will lead its management team as president of HCMS. He brings 25 years of health care IT experience and will, with the support of his executive management team, oversee day-to-day operations in Cheyenne.

"We are very pleased to become part of the WorkPartners family," said Simon. "WorkPartners is the ideal partner to help accelerate our growth, while maintaining the HCMS legacy, culture, and mission built by Hank and delivered every day to our clients by our dedicated team. We couldn't be more pleased to be joining WorkPartners and the broader UPMC organization, which is known for its impeccable reputation, innovation, and commitment to health and productivity."

"We believe that HCMS, with its unique market offering and experienced leadership team, will continue to see growth in markets that are focused on human capital as a competitive advantage," said Weir. "The acquisition will accelerate WorkPartners' national expansion, revenue growth, and client value proposition. HCMS' data management process, analytic tools, and service offerings will immediately add value to existing WorkPartners' clients. We look forward to bringing its successful data integration strategies to even more companies that are looking for real solutions for improving the productivity and well-being of their workforces."
